Hataitai Zig Zag Track - Mt Vic

01 September 2012

Mt Victoria has always been a hub for mountain biking in Wellington.

In 2009 the Port Nicholson Poneke Cycling Club (PNP) along with the Outdoor Participation Trust created a new single track descent from near Alexander Rd Saddle to the Hataitai Velodrome on Mt Victoria. The Slush Fund chipped in to help make it happen. The Zig Zag track provided a much longer and enjoyable route off Mt Vic.

The Wellington City Council (WCC) was so impressed by the work that they agreed to an extension to connect the upper Zig Zag track to Alexander Rd Saddle, making for an even longer singletrack descent. Ground Effect helped cover the costs of a bridge and boardwalk.

In 2012 the Wellington Mountain Bike Club agreed with the WCC to take on the oversight of trail building and maintenance of mtb trails on Mt Vic. Former Makara Peak President, Steve Wallace led this charge until winter 2014, Rod Bardsley then succeeded as the trail leader. In 2023 Mt Vic is now being lead by the Matairangi (Mt Vic) Trail Builders crew. There is always work to do, keep an eye on Facebook.
