Craigieburn Conservation Park
Canterbury Trail Guide
Updated 6 October 2011
These hills contain miles of top quality single track, and according to the local publican a few moa also. Craigieburn is close to the Southern Alps, so be prepared for cold weather - even in the summer. Avoid these trails in the winter and early spring as they are usually muddy and soft, or covered in snow and ice.Getting there
Head west from Christchurch on SH 73 towards Arthurs Pass. After an hour and a bit, keep your eyes peeled for the AA sign marking the Broken River Ski Field. Turn left here and you'll soon find the Cave Stream picnic area.Getting dirty
Check the map out and find a ride that suits you. There are three multi-use single tracks and a couple of ski field access roads. Most can be linked together to create a half day ride. The "Edge" is best tackled going downhill after grunting up the Craigieburn Ski Field access road, past the huts to the bottom of the tow and crossing a small metal bridge over a creek to the scree slope on the far side of the hill. The "Edge" can be accessed from the "Luge" via the "Link Track" up to Lyndon Saddle or by riding up the "Luge" from the bottom of Jacks Pass on the Broken River access road. The access roads themselves are good rides, though take care to give way to things bigger than you - like cars and earthmoving equipment. There is enough cycling here to keep you busy for a couple of days. Arrange to stay at one of the ski lodges or camp out at the picnic area. All other tracks in this area are for hikers only.
