Do you love good socks?
Well, I love good socks and Ground Effect have some nice ones in their collection, the long Ankle Biters ($29) and the shorter Toe Rags ($19). They are pricey compared to cheap supermarket socks though compared with other socks in this category they are competitively priced.
Toe Rags
As merino socks I found them comfortable, they keep your feet dry and a plus, they don't smell so great for epic rides. These are summer socks and are quite airy, for warmer merino winter socks, Ground Effect have Zig Zags and Lucifers.
Because of the colour and style of the longer ankle biter socks, they suit Mountain Biking. For road cycling I usually opt for a colour to match my kit so the shorter Toe Rags were a better match though these are a little thicker than most of my cycling socks.
Both of these socks are standing the test of time quite well and while they show signs of fuzz and wool "balling", where cheap supermarket sports socks need to be tossed in the bin, these are quality socks that will outlive cheap socks.

We've been riding in the Ankle Biter socks for a good few months now... Actually if you want to get technical they're made from Coolmax polyester designed to wick sweat and keep feet comfy. They're Ground Effect's summer socks as they also offer winter and thermal socks.
When it comes to socks Nike sports socks have often been the choice around here which seem fine although they always seem to end up with holes on the anklebone where they snag on pedals. But as they say " the best you know is the best you've tried". Slipping into the Ankle Biters was a pleasure - they're plush! Extra padding can be found across the toes and heel, which does improve comfort when riding. They also proved very good at wicking sweat compared to the Nike's, which often ended up saturated with sweat. The other bonus with these socks is that you can wear them even when you're not riding. There's something very cool about always being in a piece of cycling kit.
Note: Ground Effect has just released an updated version of the Ankle Biter that are slightly thinner but now feature merino wool and increased elastic support.

What's the difference between the Ankle Biters, Zig Zags, Shindigs and Lucifers?
> The Ankle Biters, Zig Zags, and Shindigs are our cool-weather range of socks constructed from a blend of Merino wool, nylon and elastic. The Ankle Biters, Zig Zigs and Shindigs all have additional cushioning under your feet, and the Zig Zags padding around the cuff. The Shindigs feature a graduated compression fit and X-rated elastic arch and ankle support.
> The Zig Zags are primarily for winter riding. Merino wool on the inside keeps your toes toasty while the hard wearing nylon outer keeps them looking good. The Lucifers are a thermal sock with a windproof front - providing maximum warmth in cold conditions.
Washing Instructions?
> All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach. The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation. And bleach rots natural fibres like cotton, strips the dye and can also cause irritation. As a rule of thumb, product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like Ecover, Ecostore, Earthwise or Aware.
> Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
> Drying on the line or hanging on the bedpost is generally preferable to using a dryer. Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast anyway. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you must take your threads for a spin set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot.
