How weird can a sock look? Check out the Lucifers: they look more like an inelastic overshoe than a sock, which left us scratching our heads before trying them on. The ankle cuffs are high at 6cm, but comfortably tight, and they trap the heat inside, and the loose fitting around the inseam means this heat can circulate. The WindFoil fabric covering the upper is windproof and highly breathable, while the sole features quick drying micro-fleece. We were immensely impressed with the performance of these socks, they really managed to keep our toes warm and protected from the freezing wind, while also taking longer than other socks to soak through.
Verdict: 10/10
So comfortable that you'll soon excuse the dodgy look.

Take the sting out of winter riding with these thermal socks. They're constructed from our quick drying micro-fleece 100, with a WindFoil™ top section to shield your toes from icy blasts during those rapid descents.
What's the difference between the Ankle Biters, Zig Zags, Shindigs and Lucifers?
> The Ankle Biters, Zig Zags, and Shindigs are our cool-weather range of socks constructed from a blend of Merino wool, nylon and elastic. The Ankle Biters, Zig Zigs and Shindigs all have additional cushioning under your feet, and the Zig Zags padding around the cuff. The Shindigs feature a graduated compression fit and X-rated elastic arch and ankle support.
> The Zig Zags are primarily for winter riding. Merino wool on the inside keeps your toes toasty while the hard wearing nylon outer keeps them looking good. The Lucifers are a thermal sock with a windproof front - providing maximum warmth in cold conditions.
Washing Instructions?
> WindFoil and micro-fleece garments enjoy a warm machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach. The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation. Bleach and fabric softeners may attack the WindFoil laminate. As a rule of thumb, product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like Ecover, Ecostore, Earthwise or Aware.
> Be sure not to wash with socks, fluffy towels or flannelette sheets. Lint clings to the fleece and your top will suddenly look very old.
> Wash inside-out to resist pilling.
> Line dry if possible - a warm (not hot) cycle in the dryer if you must.
