Double Take
When I first laid my eyes on the Two Timer with its zip off arms I thought "Have those Ground Effect chaps been licking toads again?" But now as the proud owner of this piece of sartorial trickery I use it in one mode or the other almost everyday. Generally I remove the arms and wear it as a vest over my Submerino. The hood keeps my head cosy as I charge down the Port Hills and across the flat to work on those chilly Canterbury mornings. Now back to the lily pad for more inspiration.

Twice as Nice...
Back in the winter of 2000 we released the Frosty Boy - our first top using windproof front panels in combination with standard thermal fabric. It was extremely warm but also versatile enough to handle a wide range of conditions. Its overnight success subsequently spawned six other combination tops in our range using either Heatwave Merino or micro-fleece with WindFoil protection up front.
One of the unforseen victims of these garments' popularity has been the Jetson windproof micro-fleece vest - a Ground Effect noble tracing its lineage back via the Pace vest to our original 1994 catalogue. Traditionally you would layer the Jeston over a thermal top like the Cadence or Submerino when winter temperatures demanded additional warmth. The Frosty Boy and Baked Alaska made the vest redundant for many riders. Reluctantly we turned off life-support for the Jetson in 2007.
But its absence niggled at us. At Ground Effect we all still packed our old Jetsons on backcountry trips. With its excellent warmth and low bulk, it is unbeatable for versatility on the bike and around the hut. There was clearly still a place for it in a rider's wardrobe.
Then last winter the Doctor Smock was reborn as a windproof vest and water resistant shell in a single garment. It was an instant hit and we seized on the opportunity to revitalise the fortunes of the venerable micro-fleece vest. The Two Timer is essentially a Frosty Boy with full-length front zip, hood and zip-off yoke so it converts into a lightweight vest. As two-garments-in-one it is both more versatile a tad warmer than Frosty, with a double layer of fleece over the shoulders and the WindFoil fleece extending further around the sides. I have lived in mine this winter.

Composite Tops
For short trips in stable weather conditions, a Ground Effect composite top lets you travel light and fast with just a single thermal layer. These designs combine a WindFoil™ front with a breathable micro-fleece or Heatwave™ Merino back. A long front zip for ventilation allows you to manage your body temperature through a wide range of conditions. Apparently you can have your cake and eat it too.

Unisex vs Women's Sizes
Most Ground Effect designs are unisex. The jackets, tights
and baggy tops generally fit both men and women equally well.
Fitted garments like cycle shorts and some tops are more gender
specific so there is generally a women's version in the Outskirts
range.
Engage the Two Timer to make an assignation with your alter ego. Zipping off the sleeves and yoke quickly switches it from a windproof fleece jacket to a hooded vest... scoring you maximum versatility on the bike combined with downtown James Brown styling.

> Yes - the front and sleeves are made from WindFoil fleece which is totally windproof and highly breathable. This makes it an incredibly warm and versatile top - ideal for short winter blasts where you want to avoid carrying additional keep-warm layers. Add the body-hugging Ristretto, Thermos or Submerino as a base layer to increase warmth and enhance moisture management.
> Even though the WindFoil is breathable, it won't actually stop you sweating and because its windproof, you lose the cooling effect of the air rushing past as you ride. So you can overheat a little when your work rate climbs but pulling down the long front zip and yanking up the sleeves provides a surprising amount of ventilation.
What's the difference between the Two Timer, Frosty Boy and Ice Queen?
> The Two Timer, Frosty Boy and Ice Queen have both WindFoil fleece fronts and arms with a micro-fleece 100 back. The WindFoil on the Two Timer wraps round around the sides, and two-layers of micro fleece over the shoulders (when in jacket mode) makes it warmer than the Frosty Boy.
> WindFoil fleece combine the quick-drying and insulative benefits of polyester fleece with a totally windproof yet highly breathable WindFoil membrane barrier sandwiched between a lightweight micro-fleece outer and wicking-mesh liner. Providing effective protection in cold, dry conditions.
> The Two Timer offers the convenience of a jacket - no battling with your helmet as you try to yank it over your head - and converts from jacket to vest in seconds (the sleeves can be stored in back pocket) creating a commuters dream garment.
