Plastic Not Fantastic

Huw Kingston has a deep history in adventure - ski touring, kayaking, mountain biking and much more in between. He also has a long connection with Ground Effect. He created and ran many pioneering Australian Mtb events for over 20 years including the Highland Fling, plus has campaigned against plastic pollution over the past 25 years - notably leading the charge to declare his home town of Bundanoon NSW free of bottled drinking water in 2009.

In June this year he delivered a compelling TED talk, Message in a Bottle, at TEDx Athens in the magnificent new Greek National Opera House. Unsurprisingly Huw is a fine raconteur with a rich back catalogue of adventures and experiences to draw on.

Craig Reucassel’s “War on Waste” programs on the ABC have hit home very resonantly In Brisbane. We have noticed that where we formerly lugged home a big bag of plastic waste on the carrier of the Shogun hybrid from our Sunday bike rides, we hardly score anything now and most people we know are plastic-conscious, toting keep-cups, avoiding straws and taking their plastic waste home for recycling. I recall the Bundanoon campaign. It was a ground-breaker. Good to hear from Huw Kingston. I hope he and Craig Reucassel continue to inspire and encourage now that Ian Kiernan has gone.
