Extra protection for your neck, nose and chin when Jack Frost turns from playful to severe. Heatwave Merino keeps you toasty and well covered should there be a 'stand and deliver' moment mid ride.

+Features
  • Heatwave hi-performance thermal fabric combines a merino inner layer with a fast-drying polyester outer.
  • Cosy, but not quite as toasty as the Black Hole made from Hot Shot™ stretch merino.
  • One size fits all.
  • Designed & made by us in Aotearoa | New Zealand.
+Tech

  Weight: 60 gm

+
A bi-component thermal fabric combining 51% merino wool and 49% polyester. Superfine 18.5 micron New Zealand merino wicks sweat away from your skin while the polyester provides a durable, non-pill outer. Lightweight at just 170gm/m2 and machine washable. Developed by Ground Effect and knitted just for us.
  • Composition: 51% merino; 49% polyester
+Man vs Wild
Merino is unrivalled for comfort as a body layer. It absorbs more moisture than synthetic fibres, mopping up excess sweat rather than letting it settle and cool on your skin. However high-aerobic activities like cycling will often overload ordinary merino. Heatwave's polyester component repels moisture to avoid total saturation of the fabric - so it dries faster to keep you toasty.
+Snug-as-a-Bug Fit
Heatwave™ Merino tops are intended to hug your body, ensuring the fabric sits against your skin to wick sweat away - keeping you dry and not chilling out.
+Hot 'n' Cold
As a single garment Heatwave™ Merino regulates your temperature through a wide range of conditions. Delivering comfort in all but the hottest climes. Yet it is versatile enough to layer under a WindFoil™, microFoil™ or HydroFoil™ shell in winter.

+More than Kiwi Made
Ground Effect clothing is crafted right here in New Zealand. Has been ever since we started back in 1994. Manufacturing locally works for us. We operate a quick-response system - holding minimal stock of any one item, but churning out a few more quick-smart when the pile gets low. The upshot is that we are seldom caught with our shelves empty, so orders get despatched the same day you place them.

+Washing

  • All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm 40ºC machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach, 'oxygen whitener' or fabric softener.
    • The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation.
    • Bleach rots natural fibres like merino, strips the dye, attacks laminates of waterproof fabrics and can also cause skin irritation.
    • Sodium Percarbonate (the main ingredient in oxygen whitener) can make colours run.
    • Fabric softener and stuff containing it like wool wash destroys the water repellent finish on waterproof and water resistant fabrics, and can cause colours to run.
  • As a rule of thumb, a product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like EcoverEcostoreEarthwise or Aware.
  • Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
  • Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast so hanging on the line or drooping over the bedpost is generally the best option. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you do take your threads for a spin, set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot. A lap in the dryer is recommended for your rain jacket, after it has dried on the line, as it helps recharge its water repellent finish.

  • Wash colours separately.

    Absolute blessing!

With the winter chills and Southerly busters picking up, my scruffs have been a god send both on the bike and also when I’m out sailing on keelboats. I bought two and am practically using them on a daily basis. The V wedge at the front means you easily get a snug fit and don’t have to worry about any sneaky drafts. The generous length also means you can pull it up at the back right up to the crown of your head and over a beanie under your helmet so can just have your eyes exposed to the cold if you need.

    Comfortable Scruff

This is a nicely made garment. I find it too warm to wear on the bike but it is great under my motorbike helmet to keep the chill off my neck and chest or just working around the house on cold days. The one size fits all is ever so slightly large (I'm slim - 186cm/77kg) but all in all I like it.

    Comfortable & Warm

I bought this on impulse and am really glad that I did. I have a Buff as well, but this Scruff is much more comfortable and fits nicely down to the base of your neck and slightly down your chest so there are no draughts. It doesn't feel at all tight or restrictive around your face, and yet sits perfectly without slipping. I'd definitely recommend. As a side note, the customer service is always excellent at Ground Effect as well. I accidentally chose the wrong colour online and it was no trouble at all to change it. Thank you.

    Scruff

The scruff completes my winter clothing kit. That cold frosty air no longer gets to where it’s not wanted, despite the loose fit on my scrawny neck. I can always hook it around my chin. Doubles as a balaclava if you really want it to.
