    ▹ More than Kiwi Made

Ground Effect clothing is crafted right here in New Zealand. Has been ever since we started back in 1994. Manufacturing locally works for us. We operate a quick-response system - holding minimal stock of any one item, but churning out a few more quick-smart when the pile gets low. The upshot is that we are seldom caught with our shelves empty, so orders get despatched the same day you place them.

    ▹ Weight

    Garment Weight: 270 gm
  • ▹ Should I wear underwear with these shorts?

Hell no. You want to have as smooth an interface as possible between your bum and the saddle. The seams on your underwear will inevitably be in the wrong place - causing rubbing and saddle sores. Also underwear is generally cotton - nice for everyday use but damp skin below is more susceptible to chaffing.

    ▹ Hitching up ya britches?

    • The challenge in fitting 3/4 length shorts and tights is the inherent tension of the fabric between your hips and knees. Even with stretch fabrics this can encourage your pants to creep down off your hips so the pad no longer fits snugly against your bum. It's more likely if you're lucky enough to have a longer-than-average femur.
    • The trick is to inch up the fabric below your knees so there is less tension along your thighs. If you are a girl, think about how you pull on your fishnet stockings. If you are a boy, think about something else.

    • All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm 40ºC machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach, 'oxygen whitener' or fabric softener.
      • The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation.
      • Bleach rots natural fibres like merino, strips the dye, attacks laminates of waterproof fabrics and can also cause skin irritation.
      • Sodium Percarbonate (the main ingredient in oxygen whitener) can make colours run.
      • Fabric softener and stuff containing it like wool wash destroys the water repellent finish on waterproof and water resistant fabrics, and can cause colours to run.
    • As a rule of thumb, a product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like Ecover, Ecostore, Earthwise or Aware.
    • Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
    • Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast so hanging on the line or drooping over the bedpost is generally the best option. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you do take your threads for a spin, set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot. A lap in the dryer is recommended for your rain jacket, after it has dried on the line, as it helps recharge its water repellent finish.

    • With shorts in particular, cold-water detergents and those with bleach or fabric softner can cause 'nappy-rash' so if you're experiencing issues in that department try a warm 40ºC machine wash and a change of cleaning brew.
    • A washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
    • UV rays accelerate the decay of lycra. Our fabric is knitted so the lycra component lies on the inside of the fabric - shielding it from the sun when you're out riding. Consequently you should avoid drying these shorts inside-out. It's not a bad idea to do so occasionally as the sun does help keep the pad hygienic - although it is treated with an anti-bacterial finish anyway. But drying in this manner is a trade-off with the damage done to the Lycra.
    • It's common practice to not wear underwear with your riding shorts so you need to wash your shorts daily. And it's recommended to give your shorts an initial wash when they're new - the eXo™ pad in particular becomes less stiff after the first wash.

    • Wash colours separately.

Arctic to Atlantic

Took two pairs of Geronimos for a 12,000km ride from above the Arctic Circle in Canada to the Atlantic Coast. Temperature ranges -3 degrees (with a Polar biting wind chill) to 36 degrees across the Badlands. Warmth wise they worked well, comfort-wise they were great for long haul days (6-12 hours for 4 months). With long stops between laundry days, a Detol spray kept the bacteria at bay for 10 day stretches. A close-up encounter with a Grizzly bear indicated the smell was less than the aroma from the snack bag on the handlebars (test was terminated with a burst of bear spray at 30 centimetres). The additional knee support over old knee injuries was a bonus. These will be my first choice riding pants for all future adventures.

Your knees will love you

These were just the ticket for some cold winter rides up the Port Hills and around Hanmer Springs. That yoou could throw them on under the baggies and not give them or Jack Frost a second thought, is a testament to how comfortable and warm they are. Expensive? Not really. People drop $$$ on all sorts of weight weeny kit for their bike, forgetting that their bike doesn't feel the cold, or have knees. These were a great investment.

Good product not perfect

Found the length of the trousers a little long for me even in the small size. Pads are ok however lacked some of the extra support needed on long road rides, 2 hours no problem.

Nice and warm but ..

Have been out wearing the Geronimos several times now in Sydney winter (10-13C) and they are excellent in keeping the legs toasty and warm. But the seat padding is something else to be desired. In comparison to other bike shorts/longs I have used, the Geronimos's (a) padding area is smaller (b) the surface is scratchier and (c) the padding thickness is a little on the thin side. This is a shame given the price paid. When I ride I wear two shorts or in winter a pair of shorts over a pair of longs. Given that after each ride when I have worn the Geronimos I have finished with minor skin abrasion, for future rides I'll be wearing the Geronimos over a pair of shorts. Good warm but less than desirable padded longs

Ground Effect

Hi there Alan. Thanks for your review. Appreciate the feedback. We'd be keen to get to the 'bottom' of the issues you're having. A softer thicker pad may give you more immediate comfort on the bike, but from our testing and experience, along with our customer feedback and product benchmarking a lighter pad will be better the more riding you do. We tend to update the chamois as technology moves on, the eXo premium pad we settled on after loads of testing and is standard in the market right now. Every now and then a chamois doesn't work for someone, it happens with any design. It sound like these shorts may just not work for you. It's worth trying them on their own, just in case it's wearing two pairs of padded shirts that's the issue, plus it's possible you may need a size up? If not then we'd be happy to concede defeat and you can return the shorts to us. Pedal on, Ernie

Good afternoon team Ground Effects! Have just got of my bike from coming over the Waitakere Ranges, it rained and was cold. Not for me however as the only cycle clothing I have is from Ground Effects. The latest addition is my Geronimos! They are fantastic so toastie and warm. Perfect coupled with a Baked Beanie, Booties, Frosty Boy, Black Hole and an Anti-Cyclone. This gear is by far the best in the market place, very well made and does not wear out. Thanks for great gear.
