▸ Washing

  • All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm 40ºC machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach, 'oxygen whitener' or fabric softener.
    • The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation.
    • Bleach rots natural fibres like merino, strips the dye, attacks laminates of waterproof fabrics and can also cause skin irritation.
    • Sodium Percarbonate (the main ingredient in oxygen whitener) can make colours run.
    • Fabric softener and stuff containing it like wool wash destroys the water repellent finish on waterproof and water resistant fabrics, and can cause colours to run.
  • As a rule of thumb, a product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like EcoverEcostoreEarthwise or Aware.
  • Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
  • Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast so hanging on the line or drooping over the bedpost is generally the best option. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you do take your threads for a spin, set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot. A lap in the dryer is recommended for your rain jacket, after it has dried on the line, as it helps recharge its water repellent finish.

  • Wash colours separately.

I have 6 pairs of these Sox some old ( more than 4 years old) and recently purchased 2 new pairs. In all honesty these sox are the only sox I have and wear every day both for riding and general everyday use. They have also survived the rigours of regular washing. A testament to quality sox if you are into long lasting comfortable sox!!

Embers. Winter socks for riding the whole year.

I recently bought a couple of pairs of embers to help with the pain I get in my feet from colder weather. I wear toe warmers but dont normally use full shoe covers to stay warm as they are an effort to take on and off every time I ride. Since I have been using the embers I have a lot less pain from the cold and the socks also last more rides before needing to be washed. They also look like they will be long wearing.Great value compared to any other merino/winter sock available. These have already become my go to socks for cooler weather riding.

First ride with these it rained, so wet feet but remained nice and warm, good and thick around the foot, good sock height and not restrictive around the calves. Top socks, would recommend, and definitely purchase again!

Embers-merino nylon socks

Excellent quality. So happy to have found a pair of hardwearing socks. I think Ground Effect will be my go-to sock shop if these ever wear out. Definitely good value for money.
