▸ Tech

A non-windproof version of WindFoil™ - Thermostat™ is a lightweight, quick-drying laminated fleece with a water repellant finish. Constructed from a knitted polyester face fabric with brushed polyester fleece on the inside. Its hyper-soft finish makes it delicious to wear against your skin. Yum. Thermostat has an excellent warmth to weight ratio. For cycling, low bulk is important - both when you're wearing the garment and when it's stashed away in your back pack or pannier. The advantages of heavier fleeces are mainly for sedentary types.
  • Composition: 100% polyester
  • Durable water-repellent (DWR) finish on face fabric.

▸ WhaleTail™
Ground Effect tops are cut with extra length in the back... and in the sleeves too. So when you stretch out in search of the perfect downhill position, neither your shirttail or sleeves will ride-up to expose your back or wrists to the elements.

▸ More than Kiwi Made
Ground Effect clothing is crafted right here in New Zealand. Has been ever since we started back in 1994. Manufacturing locally works for us. We operate a quick-response system - holding minimal stock of any one item, but churning out a few more quick-smart when the pile gets low. The upshot is that we are seldom caught with our shelves empty, so orders get despatched the same day you place them.

▸ Washing

  • All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm 40ºC machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach, 'oxygen whitener' or fabric softener.
    • The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation.
    • Bleach rots natural fibres like merino, strips the dye, attacks laminates of waterproof fabrics and can also cause skin irritation.
    • Sodium Percarbonate (the main ingredient in oxygen whitener) can make colours run.
    • Fabric softener and stuff containing it like wool wash destroys the water repellent finish on waterproof and water resistant fabrics, and can cause colours to run.
  • As a rule of thumb, a product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like EcoverEcostoreEarthwise or Aware.
  • Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
  • Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast so hanging on the line or drooping over the bedpost is generally the best option. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you do take your threads for a spin, set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot. A lap in the dryer is recommended for your rain jacket, after it has dried on the line, as it helps recharge its water repellent finish.

  • Be sure not to wash with socks, fluffy towels or flannelette sheets. Lint clings to the fleece on the inside of your top making it age before its time.

Purchased the Toaster because I wanted a mid-layer that would also double up as a outer layer for when it's not so cold. The Toaster is a great product with its full length zip and high collar, nice and light and packs away well when things warm up. Another great product from those good folk at Ground Effect.

Great casual top for off the bike as well as on

The toaster is very warm for its weight, and comfortable, with a soft fleecy lining and Ground Effect's "Thermostat" outer which is basically a lightweight fleece but with a smart finish: it doesn't look "fleecy". It's made to add that extra layer of warmth, but not to keep out the icy winds and rain. For that, you'd go for a Draft Dodger (which I have) or Hoodwink. The fit is snug. I measure at borderline M to L and the L is perfect for me. The length at the back is great for riding, but it's also perfect for off-bike activities: hiking, or general casual wear. The dark grey with blue trim is smart enough to wear around town.

Great top, fits perfectly and is extremely warm. Riding to work in -2 is no longer a worry in the fresh Canterbury mornings. Highly recommend

    Toaster review

Been on the lookout for a mid-range winter top for quite some time. Toaster is a winner! not too cold nor too hot for the Sydney winter. Combined with a Ristretto, a hoodwink, a pair of foot soldiers + chipolattas for the cool morning commutes, it just works perfect. Even found myself wearing it off the bike to keep the chill out while still looking cool ! Thanks again Ernie & Co - Keep up the good work
