Winni Goldsbury Talks Vintage Ground Effect Kit

14 April 2026

Words: Winni Goldsbury

Winni Goldsbury has been whipping up a storm on the Enduro scene in Aotearoa & Europe (2x EDR World Cup winner U21 2024), and we wish her well as she heads to the Northern Hemisphere soon for a few more fun laps & podiums. Follow along @winni_goldsbury.

I’ve been wearing Ground Effect cycle clothing since I was a tiny grom! My photo albums are dotted with the signature bright colours of Ground Effect. However, nowadays I mainly wear the retro Ground Effect kit I find in the back of my dad’s chest of drawers.

Little Winni doing a jump in her GE top and shorts.

In particular one orange and navy pullover from 1997 is now one of my must bring items on any mission, and has acted as a podium jersey on multiple occasions.

I came across this jersey one day digging through my dad's cardboard box full of old riding kit. Dad's box of kit is like an extremely lucrative gold mine for me. Every item of clothing is unique (back catalogue), and has a story behind it, which is part of the reason I love the items I scavenge from the cardboard box so much.

In the photo above I'm racing in one of the Gravity Canterbury Super Ds which are the casual Thursday night races in my hometown of Ōtautahi/Christchurch. I would pretty much always race the Super Ds in this vest, as it gets pretty chilly waiting around at the top to start, plus I personally believe the vest adds an extra layer of steez to my mediocre whips!

Last year my family had a retro riding party up at Craigieburn. We brought the big box of old riding kit, filled to the brim with sick retro Ground Effect clothing. There ended up being a group of four of us all wearing matching orange jerseys. Since then I’ve been wearing a few of these jerseys in my day to day life!

Anyhow, the moral of the story is dig through your parents' old clothes, you never know what types of gems you could find!

Likewise, I identify more with Winni’s dad in this story, but I’m intrigued he has any old GE gear — mine all gets loved to death. (Although I do have one last proper pullover Frosty Boy stashed — the best winter sports top ever (run, ride, ski). I’m still hoping you’ll start making it again before mine wear out.)

It’s not just an orange and navy pullover – it’s The ZZ Top. Zip up pocket at back to rip holes in expensive furniture. Glows in the dark – half life of 100 years. Mine is still going strong.
Classic never ends
