In mountaineering terms, 'getting to the top is only half way'. In mountain biking the descent is the 'gain after the pain'. Pinning a downhill enduro race stage pumps adrenalin and your upper body. The uphill liaison stages afford time to chat without pressure from the stopwatch. Kinda like Book Club with attitude, but no wine.

Ground Effect Revolutionaries over the years including Sam Shaw, Jamie Nicoll, Robin Pieper, Anja McDonald, Mops Newell, Sasha Smith and Tristan Rawlence are dangerously quick downhill. Sam had three shots at the Enduro World Series, as well as numerous enduro, XCO, singlespeed and DH races at home. Jamie moved his focus from the pro field to multi-day adventures. Back in the day raced five seasons on the EWS. Once dubbed 'The World's Fastest Privateer' before turning pro, he has stood on the podium at Whistler Crankworx, Mountain of Hell, Trans-Savoie, Trans Provence, Trans BC and NZ Enduro.

Anja regularly finished at the pointy end of the field in the NZ Enduro and Dodzy Memorial Enduro at Wairoa Gorge. She's a former NZ Cyclo-Cross champion and completed the inaugural 3000 km Tour Aotearoa Bikepacking 'race' in a nudge over 10 days. Mops was crowned Enduro World Series Masters Champion in 2018.
