In 2010 the Mid Canterbury Mtb Club were kept busy clearing 25km of old trail next to the Ashburton River. Running from town to the coast the original track was developed back in the 1980's but had been neglected. Increasing mtb traffic created demand for it be returned to its former glory. The Ground Effect Slush Fund bought the club a scrub cutter to help do the job. There are now four tracks accessible from a range of streets in the Ashburton township: River Trail Mtb Track; Lake Hood Track; Hakatere Trail; Chocolate Fish Race Circuit.
