The Amberley Area Cycle Trail project, led by the Hurunui Trails Trust aims to link the communities of Amberley, Leithfield and their beach townships, as well as create safe and accessible cycle/pathways for recreational use. The first leg is complete, linking Leithfield Village to Amberley. Ground Effect liked the sound of that, and has helped fund the signs for the trail.
For a good loop ride, head from Amberley via the new Amberley Area Cycle Trail to Leithfield, then left under SH One, down the Kowai Track, right at the beach and along the track to Leithfield Beach, then back up the road to Pukeko Junction for a coffee, returning via the village to cross the Kowai Riverbed again.
The project comes under the umbrella of the Hurunui Trails Trust which aims to put in place walking and cycling tracks throughout the Hurunui. You can also check out the The Waipara Trail, and meetings have started about developing a Waikari/Hawarden/Hurunui Trail.
