+FAQ

+Baggy vs Lycra
A stretch short will always deliver more performance than a baggy number as there's no surplus fabric bunched up between your bum and the saddle. However, baggies are the default choice of battle-hardened cyclists off road, on tour and around the streets. They combine a loose but not super-baggy fit with an optional mesh liner and moulded pad... providing the performance benefits of conventional stretch shorts with minimal compromise.

+Are they water-resistant?
The Hi-Impact™ fabrics have a water resistant treatment. While the pants are not waterproof, they do provide some short term resistant to drizzle and light rain. They are windproof, dry faster than lightening if you do happen to get caught out and are extremely hard wearing. For increased rain protection checkout the splashproof Hydroslides with their HydroFoil™ Plus rear panel.

+Washing

  • All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm 40ºC machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach, 'oxygen whitener' or fabric softener.
    • The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation.
    • Bleach rots natural fibres like merino, strips the dye, attacks laminates of waterproof fabrics and can also cause skin irritation.
    • Sodium Percarbonate (the main ingredient in oxygen whitener) can make colours run.
    • Fabric softener and stuff containing it like wool wash destroys the water repellent finish on waterproof and water resistant fabrics, and can cause colours to run.
  • As a rule of thumb, a product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like Ecostore, Earthwise or Aware.
  • Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
  • Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast so hanging on the line or drooping over the bedpost is generally the best option. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you do take your threads for a spin, set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot. A lap in the dryer is recommended for your rain jacket, after it has dried on the line, as it helps recharge its water repellant finish.

  • With shorts in particular, cold-water detergents and those with bleach or fabric softner can cause 'nappy-rash' so if you're experiencing issues in that department try a warm 40ºC machine wash and a change of cleaning brew.
  • A washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
  • UV rays accelerate the decay of lycra. Our fabric is knitted so the lycra component lies on the inside of the fabric - shielding it from the sun when you're out riding. Consequently you should avoid drying these shorts inside-out. It's not a bad idea to do so occasionally as the sun does help keep the pad hygienic - although it is treated with an anti-bacterial finish anyway. But drying in this manner is a trade-off with the damage done to the Lycra.
  • It's important to avoid using the dryer for any shorts with our eXo™ pad. This can cause the pad to delaminate.
  • It's common practice to not wear underwear with your riding shorts so you need to wash your shorts daily. And it's recommended to give your shorts an initial wash when they're new - the eXo™ pad in particular becomes less stiff after the first wash.

      Armchair Shorts

Yum. It's the many panels of these shorts that make them so flexible and comfortable. Zippered hand pockets are mesh-lined, the crotch is gusseted and there is even a tube repair patch sewn into a pocket. Happys are loose fitting but neat around the legs for maximum flexibility without bagginess. The integrated Lycra mesh liner is smooth against the skin and the ribbed polyester-knit padding in the seat is so plush it feels like nestling into a favourite old armchair at Grandma's place. For ultimate comfort, do not wear underwear. She's seen it all before.

      Butt saving

I recently bought another pair of Double Happy's for myself and 2 pairs for my wife. I was always super happy with my first pair. The reason for buying more was so we had shorts to use whilst racing a yacht during Airlie Beach Race Week. The crew were jealous we had padding for our butts whilst doing 4-6 hour races with the yacht heeled over at 15 degrees. Never thought to wear them on the boat. Strongly recommend them for MTBing and sailing. Our butts thank you.

      Nice short. Minimalist design

I like the shorts. A little pricey (in USD) for what you get. The knee height is just right. Doesn't catch your knee on climbs. Covers knee pads while climbing and descending. I took a hard hit on a granite boulder a few days ago. The shorts are in much better shape than my thigh! Only a small roughed-up spot. No tears or shredded spots. The pad is not my favorite for long climbs. The liner cannot be removed for cleaning. I like the way the liner is attached so the outers don't shift about. But not removable is an issue for drying and cleaning. There are very few pockets. That looks good and minimizes catch points. But it would be nice to have one more to hold food for the long rides. So i'll be using them for DH days. I'll be looking for something else for long haul/enduro days.

      Double happys

Recently I purchased a second pair of double happys for our mountain biker son who lives in Brunei. He loves them and no others will do, his first pair still have some life so he's bringing them at Christmas for mum to repair as seconds. We love your merchandise and with retirement looming prepare to hear from us in the Naki. Keep up the good work. Raewyn A
