+HyperActive™
A lightweight summer fabric packed with technology to keep you cool and dry as. The bi-component knit backs a sharp-looking polyester outer with a smooth layer of nano-charcoal polyester against your skin. Nano-charcoal disperses sweat to accelerate evaporation and is naturally anti-microbial to fight nasty smells. The fabric dries at the speed of light - great when reduced to hand washing on tour - and even performs its quick-drying magic in the wet under a rain jacket.
  • Composition: 75% polyester; 25% nano-charcoal polyester.
  • Weight: 139 gsm.
+UPF 50
HyperActive's UPF 50+ rating extends your no-burn time by 50 times over bare skin. Designs with a stand-up collar and long sleeves maximise protection from the sun's UV rays. Yank 'em up if it gets too stifling.

+More than Kiwi Made
Ground Effect clothing is crafted right here in Aotearoa | New Zealand. Has been ever since we started back in 1994. Manufacturing locally works for us. We operate a quick-response system - holding minimal stock of any one item, but churning out a few more quick-smart when the pile gets low. The upshot is that we are seldom caught with our shelves empty, so orders get despatched the same day you place them.

+Washing

  • All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm 40ºC machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach, 'oxygen whitener' or fabric softener.
    • The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation.
    • Bleach rots natural fibres like merino, strips the dye, attacks laminates of waterproof fabrics and can also cause skin irritation.
    • Sodium Percarbonate (the main ingredient in oxygen whitener) can make colours run.
    • Fabric softener and stuff containing it like wool wash destroys the water repellent finish on waterproof and water resistant fabrics, and can cause colours to run.
  • As a rule of thumb, a product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like Ecostore, Earthwise or Aware.
  • Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
  • Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast so hanging on the line or drooping over the bedpost is generally the best option. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you do take your threads for a spin, set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot. A lap in the dryer is recommended for your rain jacket, after it has dried on the line, as it helps recharge its water repellant finish.

+ Shipping
  • Items are generally packed and sent the same day your order is received.
  • Costs $9 by overnight courier within New Zealand.
  • NZ$12 by tracked airmail to Australia.
  • Around NZ$15-25 by tracked airmail to destinations elsewhere in the world - calculated in our shipping cart as you check out.
    • More shipping and tax details in our FAQ.

      Great hat for summer.

The Jolly Roger is a great little cap that fits almost unnoticed under your helmet. I bought mine to keep the sweet out of my eyes and the sun away from my 'lightly thatched scone'. The Jolly Roger has meet these expectations on all day rides and races and has exceeded my expectations for its overall comport and fit. Thanks Ground Effect.

      Best of its kind.

As a man who is loosing his hair on top, protecting yourself from the sun is a difficult task. Sunscreen is hard to apply as I still have some hair. Spray sunscreen dissolves the internals of your helmet! So a head covering is required, but most are to warm. Not the Jolly Roger. It is about as cool as you can expect from having an extra layer over your head, is thin enough to fit under your helmet, dries very very quickly so doesn't let sweat run down from it. The only thing that stopped me giving it a 5star review is the tails that are supposed to allow you to tie it up - useless as the come undone too easily and then just flap around. Bestter if they would just delete them.

Swashbuckling look in a Heat Wave

Wore my Jolly Roger in a French heat wave, up to 44 deg C some days. It was great for soaking up the sweat, stopping the sparser areas on my head from burning, and, soaked with water before wearing, acted as great under helmet airconditioning. Alas it was lost overboard, left behind at a wetting down stop ( The Rock lobster also benefits the rider when wet and on the move, and the JR was left behind), so now on Jolly Roger number 2!

A great bit of gear. Having no hair and protecting the head from the sun has been resolved. This cap fits perfectly under my helmet. It doesn't turn into a wet rag. It keeps your head cool and prevents any sweat getting into your eye's. Have just done two rides which were around 26 deg C & 32 deg C of about 36 Km's each doing a lot of climbing. Not once did i feel i had to remove my helmet to cool down.

      Jolly Roger

A very cool little number that stops my follically-challenged scalp getting cooked in the sun. Fits easily and comfortably under both my road and mtb helmets and just does the job. A good buy.
