▸ Washing

  • All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm 40ºC machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach, 'oxygen whitener' or fabric softener.
    • The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation.
    • Bleach rots natural fibres like merino, strips the dye, attacks laminates of waterproof fabrics and can also cause skin irritation.
    • Sodium Percarbonate (the main ingredient in oxygen whitener) can make colours run.
    • Fabric softener and stuff containing it like wool wash destroys the water repellent finish on waterproof and water resistant fabrics, and can cause colours to run.
  • As a rule of thumb, a product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like EcoverEcostoreEarthwise or Aware.
  • Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
  • Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast so hanging on the line or drooping over the bedpost is generally the best option. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you do take your threads for a spin, set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot. A lap in the dryer is recommended for your rain jacket, after it has dried on the line, as it helps recharge its water repellent finish.

  • Wash your gloves separately - the synthetic suede can cause havoc staining other clothing.
  • Air dry only - no dryers for these puppies.

    Toasty warm

I needed some warm gloves for those early winter morning rides. Ground Effect Chipolatas fit the bill perfectly... nice and warm, not too thick, good grip on the handlebars and levers. Really well designed and long wearing - just like all the other Ground Effect products I have.

    Cold Weather Commuters

Now that I ride daily, I go through gloves a lot quicker than I thought possible. Good thing I found this out as colder and wetter weather meant also purchasing more appropriate gear. So where do I go to but trusty GE gear? These gloves are toasty and kept me dry on the wetter days. The only issue was perspiration. The may keep the cold and wet out, but they also keep the damp in. Not so bad if you're able to dry them out (or have a second pair), but extended use may wish you wanting something breathable. Not a dealbrealer as they do their job well! Warm digits = happy digits, and no crabber's claw on the colder days.

Winter Gloves - nice and warm digits

I got a pair of these after trying on a mates pair. For the cold morning and evening rides, road or MTB they certainly keep the finger tips nice and warm. Great pair of gloves.

    comfortable and warm

My hands get cold no matter what I wear in Ballarat in rural Victoria, Australia on days where it 'feels like' about 4 degrees. These Chipolatas are as warm as any glove I have tried, so would probably be perfect for those whose hand thermostat is kinder than mine. They get the balance right between dexterity and thickness and are comfortable and nicely made, perhaps on the smallish side of the size chart. I do wish they had a bit of padding. I recommend them.
