Bikepacking: The Rebel Ride - South Island

The Rebel Ride is a self-supported, bike-packing adventure for women in Aotearoa/New Zealand. You determine your own start day and the distance you bike each day. Finish together on Sunday and celebrate with others who rode. It's the perfect opportunity to try an overnight bike adventure in a supportive environment.

Registration is by way of donation to local trails. 

Approx route distance: 306km / Approx route elevation: 3600m

Route Breakdown Approx.

  • Cromwell to Alexandra (4WD Hawksburn Road & Flatop Hill Conservation Area single track) - 66km / 1350m
  • Alexandra to Oturehua (Moa Creek and Otago Central Rail Trail) - 60km / 680m
  • Oturehua to St Bathans (Home Hills Run Rd, Mt Ida Water Race, Hawkdun Runs Rd) - 61km / 750m  - no services
  • St Bathans to Omakau (road and Otago Central Rail Trail) - 36km / 100m
  • Omakau to Alexandra (Otago Central Rail Trail) - 29km / 100m
  • Alexandra to Cromwell (Alexandra River Trail and Lake Dunstan Trail) - 54km / 650m

Kirikiriroa / Hamilton to Taupō, Taking a break in 2025

Starting in Kirikiriroa / Hamilton and following the Te Awa River Ride, Waikato River Trails and Great Lake Trails to Taupō.

You determine your own start day and the distance you bike each day but you should aim to finish in Taupo between 3-5pm on the Sunday to celebrate with others who rode.

The route is approx 210km with around 2900ms of climbing.

The ride takes in stunning scenery as it follows the Waikato River. It goes along quiet roads and some fantastic, not to mention brand new, bike trails. There are accommodation options and food stops along the way so there is opportunity to refuel and stay in places with bedding provided.
