Local residents turn out in their thousands to farewell Admiral Sir Ernest Falcon Cronundsen RN, at the start of his gallant 1997 attempt to make the first trans-polar crossing of the Antarctic by bicycle. He is accompanied by Worsley - his faithful friend, navigator and stoker on the Bike Friday.
