▸ Washing

  • All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm 40ºC machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach, 'oxygen whitener' or fabric softener.
    • The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation.
    • Bleach rots natural fibres like merino, strips the dye, attacks laminates of waterproof fabrics and can also cause skin irritation.
    • Sodium Percarbonate (the main ingredient in oxygen whitener) can make colours run.
    • Fabric softener and stuff containing it like wool wash destroys the water repellent finish on waterproof and water resistant fabrics, and can cause colours to run.
  • As a rule of thumb, a product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like EcoverEcostoreEarthwise or Aware.
  • Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
  • Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast so hanging on the line or drooping over the bedpost is generally the best option. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you do take your threads for a spin, set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot. A lap in the dryer is recommended for your rain jacket, after it has dried on the line, as it helps recharge its water repellent finish.

  • Be sure not to wash with socks, fluffy towels or flannelette sheets. Lint clings to the fleece on the inside of your top making it age before its time.

Ground Effect draft dodger review

This is the second DD jacket that I have owned. While the original one is still being used for the daily commute to work in during the Canberra winter it was getting a little tatty for travelling and outings to restaurants. One benefit of Ground Effect gear is that it lasts nearly forever. This is only a problem when trying to recall when I purchased the original DD jacket for comparisons such as these. The old DD jacket would be at least five years old and I suspect I'll get another couple of years out of it before it is retired. It's interesting to see how the DD jacket has evolved over time - the newer jacket is lighter being about 425 grams against the older version at 575 grams (as measured by a Salto analogue kitchen scale. The new design is a tighter fit which might be a problem if you need to wear a number of layers, however the warmth of the jacket means I am able to ride on a sub-zero Canberra morning with only a merino long sleeved shirt under the jacket (plus all the other gear of course - cycling longs, gloves, GE black hole and hubcap...) The current design has lost the internal lining under the full length zips on the body but this doesn't seem to be a problem with regards to warmth. The inclusion of zips on the lower arms in the new design allow airflow into the arms when the temperature warms up a little. This provides a better balanced garment for temperature control compared to the older design where at times my arms were sweating while the body was still cool. In summary - a great value for money jacket that delivers a comfortable winter ride year after year.

Dodge This

You can't. The weather can't either. This was the missing link in my husbands winter stock of Ground Effects gear. Up until now he was wearing a very bright orange light weight rain coat (another Ground Effect product) when he biked to and from work in the mornings. So for a change, he now wears a bright green dodge this and everything else (other than doing the dishes at night which he can not dodge). Its warm inside, just like a pop up toaster!!!

Another Great Jacket!

Having previously owned a storm trooper and being impressed by its 5+ years of service I felt that ground effect was the only option when hunting down a warmer option for winter. The Draft Dodger does not disappoint a few trips on cold morning plus a few respectable down pours in it and I am sold!
