  • All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm 40ºC machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach, 'oxygen whitener' or fabric softener.
    • The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation.
    • Bleach rots natural fibres like merino, strips the dye, attacks laminates of waterproof fabrics and can also cause skin irritation.
    • Sodium Percarbonate (the main ingredient in oxygen whitener) can make colours run.
    • Fabric softener and stuff containing it like wool wash destroys the water repellent finish on waterproof and water resistant fabrics, and can cause colours to run.
  • As a rule of thumb, a product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like Ecostore, Earthwise or Aware.
  • Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
  • Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast so hanging on the line or drooping over the bedpost is generally the best option. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you do take your threads for a spin, set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot. A lap in the dryer is recommended for your rain jacket, after it has dried on the line, as it helps recharge its water repellant finish.

      Strange Fruit

How weird can a sock look? Check out the Lucifers: they look more like an inelastic overshoe than a sock, which left us scratching our heads before trying them on. The ankle cuffs are high at 6cm, but comfortably tight, and they trap the heat inside, and the loose fitting around the inseam means this heat can circulate. The WindFoil fabric covering the upper is windproof and highly breathable, while the sole features quick drying micro-fleece. We were immensely impressed with the performance of these socks, they really managed to keep our toes warm and protected from the freezing wind, while also taking longer than other socks to soak through.Verdict: So comfortable that you'll soon excuse the dodgy look.

      Little Lucifers

New Zealand's Ground Effect clothing company has recently started a push for US customers, and that's a good thing. Saris reviewed a few of the women's mountain bike pieces and liked them. I've been testing their men's road stuff for the past few months and have come away mostly impressed. The Lucifer wind block socks are simply bad ***. I wore them during the Biltmore NCCX race with at-freezing temps with regular, well vented Shimano mountain bike shoes and it was just the right combo. Toes remained mobile and with feeling, and I saved the rotational weight of full winter boots. They're slim enough to fit into virtually any cycling shoe, and the seams sit on top of the toes rather than the front. It, and all the other pieces shown here, have flat seams. Insides are fleecy and warm. Honestly, these things are amazing. Couple them with shoe covers on the super cold days and you're golden.Whether wool's your thing or not (they have plenty of items without it too), Ground Effect clothing is worth a look. They've got a huge range of mens and womens cycling clothes for all seasons, plus a few casual items, and so far, everything we've tested has been very nice.

      Toasty toes

lucifers are great for my daily commute. I wonder if they come in gloves.

They kept my feet really warm with a pair of Icebreaker sports socks underneath when the temperature was 2 degrees. The same combination struggled at minus 3 degrees but I don't often go out when it is that cold. Overall I would say they are perfect in low temperatures but not below zero.
