+More than Kiwi Made
Ground Effect clothing is crafted right here in New Zealand. Has been ever since we started back in 1994. Manufacturing locally works for us. We operate a quick-response system - holding minimal stock of any one item, but churning out a few more quick-smart when the pile gets low. The upshot is that we are seldom caught with our shelves empty, so orders get despatched the same day you place them.

  • All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm 40ºC machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach, 'oxygen whitener' or fabric softener.
    • The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation.
    • Bleach rots natural fibres like merino, strips the dye, attacks laminates of waterproof fabrics and can also cause skin irritation.
    • Sodium Percarbonate (the main ingredient in oxygen whitener) can make colours run.
    • Fabric softener and stuff containing it like wool wash destroys the water repellent finish on waterproof and water resistant fabrics, and can cause colours to run.
  • As a rule of thumb, a product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like EcoverEcostoreEarthwise or Aware.
  • Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
  • Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast so hanging on the line or drooping over the bedpost is generally the best option. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you do take your threads for a spin, set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot. A lap in the dryer is recommended for your rain jacket, after it has dried on the line, as it helps recharge its water repellent finish.

  • Items are generally packed and sent the same day your order is received.
  • Costs $7 by overnight courier within New Zealand.
  • NZ$7 by tracked airmail to Australia.
  • Around NZ$15-25 by tracked airmail to destinations elsewhere in the world - calculated in our shipping cart as you check out.

      Almost perfect for Auckland commuting

I find that a proper raincoat is usually too warm for cycling commuting in Auckland. This jacket is much better - it's really breathable and sheds off the rain well enough for me. Pros: - packs down really small - nice soft and light for riding on blustery cold days - doesn't really provide any warmth which is great - I can wear more layers underneath if I need to - super breathable Cons: - I am average build, and the cut is kind of loose - the fabric is very light and it flaps a lot. A slimmer cut (and stretchier fabric?) would have been nice. The next size down was a nicer cut but the sleeves and torso were too short. - If you don't have a long sleeve top on underneath, the jacket will cling to you when it rains. No big deal I guess - could do with a few more stylish reflective strips I reckon, maybe on the back of the arms and neck

A great little jacket for keeping the wind out. And also keeping you dry in fog and misty rain. I often wear it as an alternative to a vest with arm warmers. Packs up into your jersey middle pocket very nicely. I love this jacket!

      Worth every penny

I came to buy this jacket after talking with a friend about my need for a practical outer-shell with reflective properties. They put me onto Ground Effect with the caveat that these are premium products with prices to match. After a few weeks’ use, I can comfortably say I would spend that money again. Superbly lightweight and practical, impressively windproof with good length in the back which makes a big difference when cycling. I am 191cm, 90kg and went for an XL. Right decision for me - still slim-fitting with room for layers underneath. Love the blue colour for combined visibility and cool-factor

      Phantom review

Purchased the light weight rain jacket. Fits in a jersey back pocket easily. Bright orange colour provides good visibility. Sizing is very generous. I exchanged a recommended size L for size M. I’m 183cm tall and 83kg. Quality of the garment seems good. I was provided with care and laundry advice. I’ve worn it once since receiving it and it did a good job of keeping me warm and dry in light drizzle. I’m pleased with the purchase.
