▸ Washing

  • All Ground Effect clothing enjoys a warm 40ºC machine wash. Try to avoid cold-water detergents and those with bleach, 'oxygen whitener' or fabric softener.
    • The cold-water varieties have little enzymes that are super-charged to brave the cold but can damage technical fabrics and cause skin irritation.
    • Bleach rots natural fibres like merino, strips the dye, attacks laminates of waterproof fabrics and can also cause skin irritation.
    • Sodium Percarbonate (the main ingredient in oxygen whitener) can make colours run.
    • Fabric softener and stuff containing it like wool wash destroys the water repellent finish on waterproof and water resistant fabrics, and can cause colours to run.
  • As a rule of thumb, a product that is easy on the planet is also easy on your body. Select a mild plant-based soap like EcoverEcostoreEarthwise or Aware.
  • Hand washing is sometimes the only option on tour, but a washing machine rinses more thoroughly and is preferable if you have the choice.
  • Most Ground Effect gear dries super-fast so hanging on the line or drooping over the bedpost is generally the best option. High heat can damage some fabrics so if you do take your threads for a spin, set the device on 'medium' or 'warm' rather than hot. A lap in the dryer is recommended for your rain jacket, after it has dried on the line, as it helps recharge its water repellent finish.

  • Wash colours separately.

    Great all-round socks

Comfortable socks that can go the distance without slipping down, recommend what ever your discipline.

    Stinkless!

Striking a balance that is not too hot in summer yet not too chilly in winter (depending on your shoes), merino adds the advantage of being pretty stinkless! Great fit and you don't notice them because they're not too tight or too loose, too high or too short (IMHO), so they're as far from stink as you can get

    Just the BEST socks

These are an all time favourite. I ask for the every mother’s day. You can never have too many. I do around 80kms a week and haven’t worn out a pair yet. They don’t make my feet too hot. And they don’t stink either! I used to get size M but they must have changed the sizing so I’m now a size S (8.5)

    Great quality but terrible sizing

I usually wear a size Euro 37-38 and I was just hoping that the small size might fit but there is about 5cm of extra sock at the end of my toes. And, the size chart does say Euro 39-41 so I'm not surprised. I'll just have to give them to my husband instead.

    Disappointing socks

I've always been very happy with GE products ( my original Sputnik shorts are over 10 years old and still wearable!) but after one ride my new Toe Rag socks looked liked they were 10 years old. Loose threads both inside and outside. I'll continue to use them but suspect they won't last more than a few months.
