In 2020 the Golden Bay Mtb Club signed a community agreement with Department of Conservation to build descending trails in the Takaka Hill Scenic Reserve, and so began their track building project on Takaka Hill.
The club has been hard at work ever since inching their way down the hill building track which will form part of the Pikikirunga Trail. The long term aim is to create three interlinking trails enabling riders to mtb from the Takaka Hill summit to Upper Takaka.
Stage one of this project, a 3.7 km Grade 3 flow trail beginning at the Takaka Hill Saddle and popping out at Horsehoe Bend is now open. The video tells the story of how the idea of having a mtb trail from the top of the Takaka Hill to the bottom came into reality.
In 2023 the Slush Fund donated $2000 to fund more digger time required to sort drainage on the track before the gravel is spread.
Back in 2021 the Slush Fund helped out with the first phase of this project with a $2000 top up of the $5000 of club money required to put the digger on the hill. 600 metres of new track was completed before winter that year and the inevitable Takaka rain sent them home.
In 2025 the the club are now taking a break from building trail to plan for Stages two and three of the project, working with their partners and the landowners.
